Here’s a reason to be enraged: California still allows children of ANY AGE to be entered into marriage. Legally.
But, as we discussed last week with Chelsea Clinton, here’s a reason to be encouraged: Together we can ban child marriage in California.
The discussion, at an event we hosted at University of California, Los Angeles’ Hammer Museum, was intended to ramp up and harness the rage Californians should feel that shocking pushback — from groups engaged in what New York Times’ Nicholas Kristof has called “liberal self-caricature” — is blocking state legislators from making the marriage age 18, no exceptions, a simple legislative fix that costs nothing, harms no one and ends a human rights abuse that destroys girls’ lives.
If you attended the event — co-hosted by Clinton Global Initiative, Equality Now and The Promise Institute for Human Rights at UCLA — thank you for ramping up the rage with us.
If you missed the event, or want to rewatch the conversation between Chelsea and our Fraidy Reiss, moderated by Equality Now’s Anastasia Law, you can access it here.
And if the rage is pushing you to take action, you can:
