Child marriage remains legal in most of the U.S. – imprisoning hundreds of thousands of girls in a devastating legal trap with lifelong repercussions and giving legal cover to rapists and traffickers who prey on girls.
The whole world has promised to ban child marriage by 2030 to help achieve gender equality. Other countries are keeping this promise to girls: In 2025 alone, Belize, Bolivia, Portugal, Malta and Kuwait passed laws to ban child marriage.
Here in the U.S., together we have helped to ban child marriage in 16 states and Washington, D.C. – but girls in the rest of the U.S. are being left behind.
