Whether it happens in India or the U.S., child marriage typically means loss of agency.
That was one of the takeaways from the hybrid parallel event to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women that we hosted today at the Church Center for the U.N. and on Zoom. More than 230 people joined us to watch and then discuss a documentary titled “Unmuted: Child Brides,” from Without Exception Films.
“It’s never the girls’ choice,” the film’s director, Dena Hysell-Cornejo said about the documentary, which spotlighted child marriage in India and the U.S.
Jenn Bradbury, an American child marriage survivor featured in the documentary, agreed.
“Some things are just universal,” Jenn said. “I think I thought I had a choice … because you don’t understand that you don’t.”
You can stream the Unmuted: Child Brides episode and watch a recording of the discussion. And join the push to end child marriage in the U.S., India and around the world.
