Call it “liberal self-caricature.”
That is how journalist Nicholas Kristof describes, in his latest New York Times column, the California groups that are actively blocking the legislation we at Unchained have been promoting tirelessly to ban child marriage.
Their position “underscores how well-meaning people can be out of touch with those they aim to protect,” Kristof writes.
Kristof quotes our founder/executive director, Fraidy Reiss, about the betrayal from the California affiliates of groups that in most states support or are neutral on making the marriage age 18, no exceptions.
“Especially during these dark times,” Reiss says, “when we need Planned Parenthood more than ever to fight for women and girls, it is mind-boggling and devastating to see Planned Parenthood of California instead fighting to preserve a human rights abuse that’s destroying girls’ lives.”
