Unchained’s founder/executive director Fraidy Reiss spoke today at the global Trust Conference in London. Reiss shared her personal story of forced marriage and spoke about child marriage and forced marriage in America as part of a discussion on why progress on women’s rights has stagnated worldwide.

“Let me tell you what child marriage in America looks like. Marriage before 18 is legal in all 50 U.S. states. Laws in 25 states do not specify any minimum age for marriage,” Reiss said during her speech. “We won’t stop until we end child marriage, and then forced marriage, in America.”

Some 650 global leaders and pioneering activists convened at the two-day conference, hosted by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, to explore solutions to human rights issues.
